Swannies attend Umpiring Course

4 Swannies attended an Umpiring Course, (organised by Hants Netball) last Saturday.
Sandy Miles, one of our Junior Coaches, and
3 U15's, Rachel Carrick, Katie Ward and Laura Rudland.
We're hoping that some mentoring for the umpires will take place in the Spring, on Monday evenings to bring them up to speed and help them through their Beginners Award.

It's very important that we continue to expand our gallant bunch of umpires, as we need them to help support the ever increasing demands on our current workforce!!

Report from Nicole Pollock from the South Region round of the
National Schools Tournament
on 30th January 2010,
at the Kingsmead Netball Centre, High Wycombe.

"On Saturday 30th January, Sarah Bull and I played for the
Thornden School U16's in the South Region round of the National Schools Competition.

It was a really thrilling and exhilerating tournament despite the freezing weather.  We played a total of eight matches, seven minutes each way and the tournament went on all day.  I would say our greatest match was the semi-finals as it was the most gripping and it was the first match in which we played as a proper team.  At the end of full time, we were drawing, so we went on to play two minutes each way extra time.  It was at this point where we all realised how much we wanted to win (especially the year 11's as it was their last year).  At the end of extra time we had won 4-0 and completely outplayed them.  We felt ecstatic!  Although we did not win the tournament, we came runners up  and therefore are through to represent the South Region (which was our ultimate aim) in the finals of the National Schools Tournament to be held at Roedean School on March 20th".

Congratulations to Nicole and Sarah, and we wish Thornden
all the very best in the finals, whoich take place on 20th March, at Rodean School, Brighton

Jilly ran a "Taster Umpiring Course" on Saturday.
20 players attended and all of them had the opportunity to
"blow the whistle", and sone of our U13's came along to help play.
A great introduction and it'll give them that extra bit of confidence
when they attend the Beginner's Course in March.
Big thank you to everyone who came, and especially to Jilly.

Clubmark
Only clubs that are affiliated to a Sport England recognised national governing body (NGB) can gain Clubmark accreditation.
Currently 30 national governing bodies of sport (NGBs) are licensed to award Clubmark. These cover a diverse array of sports from ball games such as cricket and rugby to watersports like canoeing and rowing.

About Clubmark
Sport England recognises and values the commitment made by sports clubs to develop high quality, welcoming environments for young participants. The development of clubs that encourage young people to take-up sport, improve their talents, possibly play a leadership role and give them the option to initiate and maintain life-long participation in sport is an essential part of supporting the sporting infrastructure in England.
Clubmark was introduced in 2002 by Sport England to:
• Ensure that accrediting partners apply core common criteria to ensure that consistent good practice and minimum operating standards are delivered through all club development and accreditation schemes.
• To empower parent(s)/carer(s) when choosing a club for their children.
• To ensure that Clubmark accredited clubs are recognised through a common approach to branding.
• To provide a focus around which all organisations involved in sport can come together to support good practice in sports clubs working with children and young people.
Clubmark accreditation is awarded to clubs that comply with minimum operating standards in four areas:
• The playing programme
• Duty of care and safeguarding and protecting children and young people
• Sports equity and ethics
• Club management
Clubs working towards accreditation can receive support and advice from their NGB and other partners such as county sports partnerships (CSPs). Circumstances will vary between clubs and sports but the process of accreditation is the same. There is only one set of paperwork to complete and in general most clubs are well on the way to achieving accreditation without realising it.

MASSAGE THERAPIST AVAILABLE
Dear netballer,
My name is Kim Skene and I play netball for JHC Netball Club in the Southampton League. I also coach at local clubs including Winchester NC, Slug and Lettuce NC, and 1st team Coach at Peter Symonds College in Winchester as well as various schools.

I am a fully qualified Swedish Massage Therapist and am now a fully qualified Sports Massage Therapist, so I can now specialise in the treatment of sports people who have a particular interestin netball.

Having learnt a whole range of techniques and methods on the sports massage course, I am keen to bring these into my business set up and to that end am looking for players who have particular injuries or problems who feel that a sports massage would give them a deeper, more specialised approach rather than a general massage.

For people registered with the AENA – which is basically all club members – I am offering a reduced rate for a 30 minute treatment of £20.00. There would be a full consultation prior to the first treatment.

A bonus for clients is that I am able to travel to your home to do the treatment, as well as you being able to come to me. As long as the travelling distance is not too far – I live in Fair Oak near Eastleigh – there will be no extra charge for petrol.

If you would like to take advantage of this offer, or you have any queries or questions regarding it, please contact me on my mobile telephone or, preferably, email me as detailed below.

Many thanks for your support in this new venture and I look forward to hearing from you.

With kind regards,
Kim Skene

IMPORTANT BITS FROM UPDATE No.7
Talking about snow and ice, that leads us onto......
ICE
Message from the Ambulance Service
The concept of ICE is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations.
As mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during an emergency
under the name ICE - In Case of Emergency.

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones with patients but they didn't know which number to call.
He therefore thought it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognised name for this purpose.
In an emergency, the Emergency Services /hospital staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as
ICE.
For more than one contact, simply enter ICE1, ICE2

SUPPORTING ALL OUR TEAMS
If you're playing early then we really do encourage you (whenever possible) to support our later teams for at least 1/2 game and if you're playing late then whenever possible do come early and support our 10.30am team. Support is vital and really does work its magic as everyone likes to hear lots of encouragement and acknowledgement of good play. Our Regional team too appreciate you being there for them, and play on Sundays. Their home games are either at Crestwood or Wyvern so if you're able to come along and watch some breathe taking netball then please do so. Full details of who they are playing is on the website.

UNABLE TO ATTEND TRAINING FOR ANY REASON??
Could you please ensure you continue to notify your league captain if you are unable to attend training on Thursday evenings. Captains, please keep an attendance log for us - many thanks.

MOBILE PHONE PROJECT
Don't forget we are collecting old mobile phones for recycling and would appreciate you rummaging around your drawers for old, broken unwanted phones that we can turn into cash for the Club - £3 per phone so this could buy some serious specialist equipment for your benefit.

SWAN BLACK

Swan Black  18 v 17 Gems
This was certainly a game of two halves!  We won the first quarter 6 -2. Clare our coach said it was the best she had seen us play.  Tempting fate or what!!
The second quarter 9 - 9 ouch!
Third quarter pulled it back 11- 16 to us.
Forth quarter was tight 18 - 17 just a win to us.

STILL lots of things to work on; changing of pace and direction, cutting back, intercepting and keeping hold of the ball!

SWAN GOLD

Possibly our last match of the Flood lit season, another cold night, we arrived and upon checking the results so far saw that we were lying 3rd in our group, so onwards with our next match – "Girls with Balls" you start wondering how they got that name, then decide that it’s best not to analyse these things too much. They had first centre pass which we turned over, and then went on to score 2 more goals. The feeling of nerves start to drain away as we realised that they are not as scary in real life as they sound, then they scored 3 goals in a row and suddenly the nerves start flooding back as you realise it’s not going to be a push over. We then scored and are in the lead again as the 1st quarter finishes. We settled down in the 2nd quarter and our passing becomes more accurate and fluid, Tricia got a hard time as she was frequently double marked, and their marking was very good but their passing and judgement let them down and at the end of the 2nd quarter our lead was widening. The third quarter seemed to get quite physical, with lots of grappling with the ball on the floor, they were starting to get a bit frustrated by now, but we weren’t going to let up and with our Swan Gold determination finished the quarter 12-7 to us, the final quarter produced the end result of 13-9, a satisfying and well earned result to end the season!

BLUES REPORT by Ruby

We Saturday 6th March we played Leighton, who are currently top of the league. We knew it was going to be a tough game, and last time we played them they reached more than half our score. We remembered they had a very tall GA and other players, so our game plan was to try and make sure they couldn't exploit this height. We started well, turning over their centre and going 2 up. We all stuck on our players brilliantly, Livi got many interceptions. They had a very nippy centre who was their link player. At half time, we were down by 6, however that did not reflect how well we were playing. We were finding it hard to play to the umpire's terms, who kept pulling us up especially in the D. In the 3rd quarter we pulled it back so we were only down by 3, and at 3/4 time we just had 4 to catch up on. However, the final score was 42-36 to them. Although we lost, I truly believe and I think others would agree, that it was our best game. It show's how well we have come on as a team since the last time we played them. I wish we could have one last chance to play them because I think we could beat them. Robyn got players player, again :)

FITNESS
ENDURANCE TRAINING

You all need to do some aerobic work, to keep your fitness levels up.
It can take various forms, and quoting from one of the Talent booklets:

RUNNING
Running is the number one training method. Netball is a running
based sport and the majority of your endurance training should consist of running based activities.
Other ways of keeping fit are:-
Aqua Jogging, swimming, cycling
Rowing/ stepper, good non-impact alternatives to running but rowing does require good technique.
Also problems working at the required rate when stepping.

So, ENDURANCE PROGRAMME
Start of with a 15 min run.
Intensity is Level 3 ie 76-80% MHR. We talked about Max Heart Rate a few weeks ago.
MRH = 220-age x %
so for an intensity of 80% , and you are 20, then your pulse rate should be
220-20=200 x 80% = 160
For the Potential Talent Athletes they had to do 3, yes 3 Endurance session per week.
You need to do at least one run per week, gradually building up from 15 to 20 minutes.
